Fluocinonide 0.05% topical solution is a high-potency corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and itching in certain skin conditions.
What it’s used for
- Inflammatory and pruritic skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis, atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis.
- Often applied to the scalp when using the solution form, though it can be used on other areas as directed.
Important safety notes
- Potent steroid: can thin the skin, cause stretch marks, hair follicle changes, and other skin changes with long-term use or over large areas.
- Systemic absorption is possible, especially with large areas, over long periods, on compromised skin, or with occlusion (covered with a bandage). In children, absorption and systemic effects can occur more readily.
- Not for use on the face, groin, or skin folds unless a clinician specifically directs you, and facial use generally requires a much lower-potency steroid.
- Do not use on skin infections (bungal/fungal or bacterial) unless your clinician also treats the infection.
- Common local side effects: burning, itching, irritation, dryness.
General dosing guidance (follow your clinician’s instructions)
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1–2 times daily. Use the smallest amount needed to control symptoms.
- For scalp: apply to the affected scalp areas; try not to wash the scalp right after applying. Use as directed (often 1–2 times daily for up to 2 weeks).
- Duration: use for the shortest time necessary. Prolonged use beyond a couple of weeks, or use on large areas, should be supervised by a clinician.
- After application, wash hands unless treating the hands.
Who should be cautious
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: discuss with your clinician.
- Children: more susceptible to side effects; use only under professional guidance and usually for shorter durations and smaller areas.
- People with a history of thinning skin, ulcers, or infections on the treated area.
