What is Defencath? Defencath is a medication used to prevent and treat Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) caused by certain types of bacteria [1]. It is a recombinant human cathelicitin, a type of antimicrobial peptide that disrupts bacterial cell membranes. How Does Defencath Work? Defencath works by directly interacting with and disrupting bacterial cell membranes, preventing the bacteria from causing infections [2]. Unlike traditional antibiotics, Defencath is not affected by antibiotic resistance mechanisms, making it an effective treatment option against resistant bacteria. Prevention of CRBSI Using Defencath Defencath can be used to prevent CRBSIs in patients with central venous catheters or other implanted medical devices.
