How Kevzara Is Administered
Kevzara (sarilumab) is given as a subcutaneous injection under the skin, typically in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm. Patients or caregivers administer it at home using pre-filled syringes or autoinjectors. It's approved for adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis.
Dosage and Frequency
Standard starting dose is 200 mg every 2 weeks, given as two 100 mg/1.1 mL injections (one in each side of the body). Doctors may reduce to 150 mg every 2 weeks if needed for side effects like low neutrophils or liver enzyme elevation. Inadequate response prompts dose increase or switch to other therapies.[1]
Step-by-Step Injection Guide
- Wash hands and clean injection site with alcohol swab; let dry.
- Inspect syringe/autoinjector for damage or particles—do not use if present.
- Pinch skin, insert needle at 45-90 degree angle, inject fully over 5-10 seconds.
- Hold for a few seconds after injection, then remove and press clean cotton ball on site (no rubbing).
Rotate sites to avoid irritation. Full instructions come with the device; training from a healthcare provider is recommended first time.[1]
Storage and Preparation
Keep refrigerated at 36-46°F (2-8°C) in original carton. Can stay at room temperature up to 30°C (86°F) for 24 hours max. Do not freeze, shake, or expose to light. Let warm to room temperature for 30 minutes before injecting. Discard if expired or mishandled.[1]
Who Can Give It and When to Skip
Adults self-administer after training. Children under 18 need adult supervision. Skip dose if infection suspected or blood tests show issues (e.g., ANC <1000/mm³); consult doctor. First dose in office for monitoring.[1]
