Belsomra, also known as suvorexant, was developed by Merck & Co., a US-based multinational pharmaceutical company. Merck acquired the rights to the medication through their purchase of Inspire Pharmaceuticals, the original developer, in 2010.

In 2014, the FDA approved belsomra for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep initiation. However, due to disappointing sales, Merck discontinued belsomra in the US market in 2019.
