Is it safe to take Advil PM with doxycycline?
Advil PM contains ibuprofen (Advil) plus an antihistamine called diphenhydramine (often the “PM” ingredient). Doxycycline’s main interactions are usually with antacids/supplements that contain calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, and with iron or zinc. Advil PM doesn’t fall into those major interaction categories, so there’s no common, direct drug–drug interaction listed between doxycycline and ibuprofen or diphenhydramine.
That said, doxycycline can irritate the stomach in some people, and ibuprofen can also irritate the stomach, so using both may increase the chance of heartburn, nausea, or stomach pain.
Do ibuprofen or diphenhydramine affect how doxycycline works?
- Ibuprofen: Doesn’t typically reduce doxycycline absorption in the way that calcium/magnesium/iron antacids do.
- Diphenhydramine: Doesn’t commonly affect doxycycline absorption, but it can make you drowsy—important if you’re taking doxycycline and need to be alert the next morning.
What spacing should I use between doxycycline and Advil PM?
If you want to be extra cautious about stomach irritation:
- Take doxycycline with a full glass of water and stay upright for at least 30 minutes.
- If you notice nausea, consider separating doses by a few hours (for example, take doxycycline earlier in the day and Advil PM at bedtime).
Avoid taking doxycycline at the same time as antacids or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, or zinc. Those do interfere with absorption.
Who should avoid Advil PM while on doxycycline?
Be more cautious (or ask a clinician/pharmacist first) if you:
- Have a history of stomach ulcers/GI bleeding, because both doxycycline and ibuprofen can be harsh on the stomach.
- Have kidney disease, because ibuprofen can worsen kidney function in some people.
- Need to avoid sedation (diphenhydramine can cause strong drowsiness and impair driving).
When to get medical help
Stop and get urgent help if you develop severe stomach pain, black/tarry stools, vomiting blood, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or a widespread rash while taking doxycycline and Advil PM.
If you tell me your doxycycline dose (mg) and how often you take it, plus whether you take any antacids, calcium/iron supplements, or multivitamins, I can suggest the safest timing.
