Tamsulosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker. It relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck by blocking alpha-1 receptors, which reduces urinary outflow resistance and helps improve urine flow in people with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This improves symptoms such as difficulty starting urination and weak urine stream.
Tamsulosin is more selective for alpha-1 receptors, with a preference for the alpha-1A subtype that is found in the prostate. By selectively targeting these receptors, it aims to improve urinary symptoms while minimizing effects on blood pressure compared with less selective alpha blockers.
