Quetiapine (marketed as Seroquel and a few other brand names) was first synthesized in the late 1970s.
Discovery / synthesis – The compound was developed by researchers at the pharmaceutical company Searle (later part of Pfizer) in 1978‑1979, as part of a program aimed at finding new atypical antipsychotics with fewer side‑effects than older agents.
Clinical development – After pre‑clinical studies, quetiapine entered human trials in the early 1980s. It was licensed to Eli Lilly in 1989 for further development.
Regulatory approval – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved quetiapine for the treatment of schizophrenia in 1997. It was subsequently approved for bipolar disorder (2002) and major depressive disorder (2011) among other indications.
