Vascepa contains icosapent ethyl, a purified form of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA. It interacts with certain blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs, including warfarin and aspirin. These interactions can increase bleeding risk. Some patients also take it with statins, but that combination has been tested in clinical trials without major issues.
It has been tested in the REDUCE-IT trial with background statin therapy. In that study, patients on Vascepa plus statins showed reduced cardiovascular events. The FDA approved Vascepa for this use.
Blood thinners strengthen the effect of Vascepa on platelet function. This leads to increased bleeding risk. Patients taking warfarin must monitor INR levels closely.
