Can you take vitamin A with acne medications?
It depends on which acne medicine you’re using. The main issue is that many acne treatments already involve vitamin A–type activity, so adding vitamin A can raise the risk of vitamin A toxicity.
Which acne meds are most likely to interact with vitamin A?
Vitamin A–related risk is highest if your acne medicine is a retinoid, including:
- Topical retinoids (like tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene)
- Oral isotretinoin (Accutane and generics)
In particular, oral isotretinoin is the one most strongly associated with dangerous additive vitamin A effects, so vitamin A supplements are generally avoided unless your clinician specifically tells you to take them.
