Can you take fish oil while on Vascepa?
Vascepa (icosapent ethyl) is a purified form of omega-3 fatty acid (EPA). Fish oil supplements also provide omega-3s (often a mix of EPA and DHA). Taking fish oil alongside Vascepa can increase total omega-3 intake, so you should only do it if your clinician says it’s appropriate for your situation.
What should you check on the label?
Look at how much EPA and DHA the fish oil contains. Because Vascepa already adds EPA, the main question is whether the added fish oil would push your total omega-3 intake higher than intended.
Is it dangerous to combine them?
The key practical concern is that higher omega-3 dosing can raise the risk of bleeding in some people (especially if you also take blood thinners or have bleeding risks). Your prescriber can weigh that against cardiovascular benefits and your current meds.
Who should be extra careful?
Be especially cautious and ask your clinician first if you:
- Take anticoagulants/antiplatelet drugs (for example, warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, clopidogrel, or aspirin at higher doses)
