What Are Mounjaro and Ozempic?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist from Eli Lilly, approved by the FDA in 2022 for type 2 diabetes and later for weight loss as Zepbound. Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist from Novo Nordisk, approved in 2017 for type 2 diabetes and used off-label for weight management (Wegovy is its weight-loss version).
Both mimic gut hormones to boost insulin, slow digestion, and reduce appetite, but Mounjaro targets two hormones while Ozempic targets one.[1][2]
How Do They Compare for Weight Loss?
Clinical trials show Mounjaro leads to greater weight loss. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, patients on 15 mg Mounjaro lost 22.5% of body weight over 72 weeks, versus 14.9% on 2.4 mg semaglutide (Wegovy dose) in a separate head-to-head analysis from a 2024 Eli Lilly study.[3][4] Real-world data echoes this: Mounjaro users average 15-20% loss, Ozempic 10-15% over a year.[5]

Effectiveness for Blood Sugar Control
For type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro reduces A1C by 2.3% at highest doses (SURPASS trials), outperforming Ozempic's 1.9% (SUSTAIN trials).[6][7] Mounjaro works faster on A1C drops and sustains them longer in head-to-head data.
Side Effects and Safety
Both cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation—GI issues hit 20-30% of users, often fading after weeks. Mounjaro has slightly higher nausea rates early on (25% vs. 20% for Ozempic) but similar discontinuation rates (~7%).[8] Rare risks like pancreatitis or thyroid tumors apply to both; no head-to-head mortality differences. Mounjaro's dual action may increase heart rate more.[9]
Patients report Mounjaro feels "stronger" on appetite suppression but with more initial stomach upset.
Cost and Availability
Without insurance, Mounjaro pens cost $1,000-$1,300/month; Ozempic $900-$1,100. Savings cards drop both to $25/month for eligible patients. Supply shortages hit both in 2023-2024, but Mounjaro ramps up faster now. Compounded versions exist for both amid demand.[10]
Dosing and Administration
Weekly subcutaneous injections. Mounjaro starts at 2.5 mg, titrates to 15 mg (six doses). Ozempic starts at 0.25 mg, up to 2 mg (four doses). Mounjaro allows faster titration for some.[11]

Eli Lilly manufactures Mounjaro; Novo Nordisk makes Ozempic.
