How long does artesunate treatment typically last?

Artesunate is given intravenously for severe malaria, lasting 24 to 48 hours until oral follow-on therapy can begin. For uncomplicated cases, oral artesunate is combined with another drug such as amodiaquine or lumefantrine and taken for three days.

What side effects appear during short versus long courses?

Short courses, 24 to 48 hours, keep exposure low and limit cumulative risk of delayed hemolysis, a condition where red blood cells break down days or weeks after treatment ends. Longer oral regimens, three days or more, raise the chance of gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, and fatigue. Longer exposure also increases the chance of delayed hemolysis in non-immune patients.

Can side effects continue after stopping artesunate?

Yes. Delayed hemolysis can start up to 30 days after finish of the treatment. It occurs most often in patients who recover from severe malaria with high initial parasite loads. Monitoring hemoglobin levels for two to four weeks after completion is recommended.

Why do side effects vary with duration?
