What are the serious side effects of Actemra? Actemra, a biologic medication, is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and giant cell arteritis (a condition that causes swelling in the head). While generally well-tolerated, Actemra can cause serious side effects, particularly with long-term or high-dose use. Increased risk of infection Actemra may increase the risk of serious and potentially life-threatening infections, including pneumonia, tuberculosis, and sepsis [1]. According to the FDA, the risk of infections with Actemra is estimated to be 2-3 times higher than with conventional medications. Neutropenia and neutrophil count changes Actemra has been associated with a decrease in neutrophil count (neutropenia) in some patients, increasing the risk of infections [2]. Monitor neutrophil counts regularly when using Actemra, especially in patients with a history of infections. Hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis Rare but potentially life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) have occurred in patients taking Actemra [3]. Monitor patients closely for signs of anaphylaxis, such as hives, difficulty breathing, and rapid heartbeat. Other serious side effects Actemra may also increase the risk of congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism, cardiovascular events, and stroke [4]. Regular monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors and blood pressure is essential when using Actemra. Common side effects In addition to serious side effects, Actemra can cause more common side effects, including: * Headache * Fatigue * Nausea * Diarrhea * Muscle pain * Joint pain or swelling It is essential to note that this list is not exhaustive, and patients should always consult their healthcare provider or the medication label for the most up-to-date and comprehensive information on Actemra's potential side effects.
