Do I need to eat before taking Advil?
For most people, you do not have to eat before taking Advil (ibuprofen). Many people take it with water and it works fine on an empty stomach.
What changes if you take it on an empty stomach?
Taking Advil without food can irritate the stomach and increase the risk of heartburn, nausea, or stomach pain. If you have a sensitive stomach or you’ve had stomach irritation from ibuprofen before, taking it with food (or milk) usually helps.
How should I take it to reduce stomach side effects?
A common approach is to take each dose with a meal or snack, especially if you take it more than occasionally. Drinking a full glass of water with the dose can also help.
When should you avoid taking it without food?
You should be extra cautious (and prefer taking it with food) if you have:
- A history of stomach ulcers or GI bleeding
- Significant acid reflux or frequent heartburn
- Other reasons your clinician has told you to protect your stomach
Are there special instructions for your situation?
If you tell me the form you’re using (tablets, liquid, “Advil PM,” etc.), your age, and whether you’re using it for pain or fever, I can help you interpret the usual directions more precisely.
