Common Side Effects of Eliquis
Eliquis (apixaban) most often causes minor bleeding issues like nosebleeds, bruising, gum bleeding after dental work, or heavier menstrual periods. Other frequent effects include nausea, anemia, and minor cuts that bleed longer than usual.[1][2]
Serious Risks and Bleeding Complications
The main danger is major bleeding, which can be life-threatening. This includes gastrointestinal bleeding (blood in stool or vomit), intracranial hemorrhage (brain bleed), spinal or epidural hematoma (especially after procedures), and surgical site bleeding. Eliquis heightens fall-related injury risks due to its anticoagulant action. Seek immediate help for symptoms like severe headache, dizziness, weakness, red or black stools, coughing blood, or prolonged bleeding.[1][2][3]
What Increases Bleeding Risk?
Age over 65, low body weight, kidney or liver problems, prior bleeding history, or concurrent use of NSAIDs (like ibuprofen), aspirin, SSRIs, or other blood thinners amplify risks. Avoid these combinations without doctor approval. Trauma, surgery, or procedures like spinal taps also raise concerns.[1][2]
How Does Eliquis Differ from Warfarin in Side Effects?
Unlike warfarin, Eliquis doesn't require frequent blood tests but offers no reversal agent like vitamin K—Andexxa (andexanet alfa) is approved for urgent reversal instead. Eliquis has lower intracranial bleed rates but similar GI bleed risks in trials.[3][4]
Rare but Reported Side Effects
Less common issues include hypersensitivity reactions (rash, itching, swelling), low platelets (thrombocytopenia), or allergic responses. Post-marketing reports note Stevens-Johnson syndrome or blood blisters in rare cases.[1][2]
Patient Warnings and Management
Stop Eliquis before surgery or invasive procedures as directed—risk persists up to 48 hours after last dose. Not for use in active major bleeding or with severe liver disease. Report all symptoms promptly; regular monitoring isn't routine but kidney function checks are advised.[1][3]
