Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium (often called “amoxicillin-clavulanate” or “Augmentin”) is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including when the bacteria may produce enzymes (beta-lactamases) that would otherwise break down amoxicillin. [1][2] Common uses include: - Sinus infections (sinusitis) - Ear infections (otitis media) - Throat infections, including strep throat - Lung infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia - Skin and soft-tissue infections - Urinary tract infections - Bite wounds and other infections caused by animal or human bites
Clavulanate potassium helps block beta-lactamase enzymes made by some bacteria. That protection helps amoxicillin keep working, so the combination can treat a wider range of bacteria than amoxicillin alone. [1][2]
This combination is for bacterial infections and does not treat viral illnesses like the common cold or most cases of flu. [1]
