What rare but serious side effects can Ozempic cause?
Ozempic (semaglutide) can cause rare, serious side effects that need prompt medical attention. The most serious reported risks include:
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
Ozempic can cause pancreatitis. Seek urgent care if you get severe abdominal pain (especially if it spreads to the back), with or without vomiting. [1]
Severe allergic reactions
Rarely, people may have a serious allergic reaction. Get emergency help if you develop swelling of the face/tongue, trouble breathing, or widespread hives. [1]
Gallbladder problems (including gallstones)
Ozempic can rarely lead to gallbladder issues such as gallstones or inflammation of the gallbladder. Watch for symptoms like right-sided upper belly pain, fever, nausea/vomiting, or yellowing of the skin/eyes. [1]
Kidney injury from dehydration (especially if you are vomiting or have diarrhea)
Serious dehydration from side effects like vomiting or diarrhea can contribute to kidney problems. Contact a clinician urgently if you can’t keep fluids down, have persistent vomiting/diarrhea, or notice reduced urination. [1]
Low blood sugar (mainly if combined with other diabetes medicines)
Ozempic alone has a low risk of hypoglycemia, but the risk rises if you take it with insulin or sulfonylureas (like glipizide or glimepiride). Serious low blood sugar can be dangerous. Symptoms can include shakiness, sweating, confusion, dizziness, or fainting. [1]
Thyroid C-cell tumors (risk in animal studies; warning applies to people with certain histories)
Ozempic carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors, based on findings in rodents. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or those with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not use it. Report symptoms like a neck lump, trouble swallowing, or persistent hoarseness. [1]
When should you seek emergency care?
Go to the ER or call emergency services if you have symptoms of:
- Severe allergic reaction (trouble breathing, face/tongue swelling, widespread hives) [1]
- Suspected pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain, possibly with vomiting) [1]
- Signs of serious gallbladder disease (significant right-sided belly pain, fever, jaundice) [1]
- Severe hypoglycemia (confusion, fainting, seizures, inability to safely treat low blood sugar) [1]
