Common Vascepa Side Effects
Patients most often report joint pain, with rates around 2-3% higher than placebo in clinical trials. Other frequent issues include gout (about 1.7% vs. 1.1% placebo) and atrial fibrillation (2.7% vs. 2.1%). These occur in roughly 10-12% of users overall.[1][2]
Serious Side Effects to Watch For
Bleeding risk increases, especially when combined with blood thinners like aspirin or anticoagulants—symptoms include unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in urine/stool. Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing) require immediate medical attention. Vascepa may raise blood sugar levels, a concern for diabetics.[1][2][3]
How Side Effects Differ from Lovaza
Unlike Lovaza (another fish oil-based drug), Vascepa's purified EPA form shows lower rates of gastrointestinal issues like burping or indigestion (under 5% vs. higher with Lovaza). No increased risk of myopathy or liver enzyme elevation in trials.2
Side Effects in Patients with Diabetes or Heart Disease
In the REDUCE-IT trial (8,179 high-risk patients), serious bleeding occurred in 2.7% on Vascepa vs. 2.1% placebo, with no excess in diabetics. Joint pain was more common in those over 65. Monitor triglycerides and A1C closely.[2][3]
What Happens If You Miss a Dose or Stop Suddenly
Missing doses rarely causes rebound effects, but stopping abruptly may raise triglycerides quickly. No withdrawal syndrome reported, unlike statins. Restart as prescribed to maintain cardiovascular benefits.[1][3]
Vascepa Interactions Raising Side Effect Risks
Amplifies bleeding with warfarin, clopidogrel, or NSAIDs. Avoid with other omega-3 supplements to prevent overdose. Grapefruit juice has minimal impact.[1][2]
