Does Aranesp Require Refrigeration?
Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa) must be refrigerated at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) in its original carton to protect it from light. Do not freeze or shake the vials or prefilled syringes.[1][2]
How Long Can It Stay Out of the Fridge?
Unopened Aranesp can be left at room temperature (up to 77°F or 25°C) for no more than 30 days total across multiple occasions. Once at room temperature, do not return it to refrigeration. Discard if left out longer or exposed to higher temperatures.[1][2]
What If It's Frozen or Exposed to Heat?
Do not use if frozen—even if thawed—or if it has been above 77°F (25°C) for over 30 days. Freezing destroys the medication's effectiveness. Heat exposure can degrade it as well.[1]
Storage Rules for Prefilled Syringes vs. Vials
Both forms follow the same rules: refrigerate until use, protect from light, and allow to reach room temperature before injecting (takes about 30 minutes). Single-dose versions have no preservative, so discard unused portions.[2]
Patient Travel and Handling Tips
For travel, use a cooler with ice packs but avoid direct ice contact to prevent freezing. Check temperature indicators if available. Always inspect for discoloration or particles before use.1
