Does losartan cause weight gain?
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It is not known to directly cause weight gain in the way some other medicines do (for example, certain diabetes drugs or steroids). In general, weight gain is not considered a typical or expected effect of losartan.
That said, some people can still see changes on the scale while taking losartan, because weight can fluctuate for many reasons (diet, activity, other medications, or changes in heart/kidney status).
Can losartan lead to fluid retention (and show up as weight gain)?
ARBs like losartan usually do not cause significant swelling on their own, but any cardiovascular medicine situation can affect fluid balance. If losartan is being used for high blood pressure or heart-related conditions, weight can rise if fluid retention develops from the underlying condition or from other medications.
Extra fluid weight often comes with signs like swelling in the legs/ankles, sudden weight increase over days, or shortness of breath.
When weight increases on losartan, what else might be responsible?
Common non-losartan reasons include:
- Other medicines started or adjusted around the same time (some antidepressants, steroids, diabetes medications, or medications that affect fluid balance)
- Higher calorie intake or reduced activity
- Hormonal changes
- Worsening kidney function or heart failure (if applicable), which can cause fluid gain
What should you do if you’re gaining weight on losartan?
If you notice rapid or significant weight gain, especially over a short time, contact a clinician. Get urgent help if weight gain comes with symptoms such as:
- Trouble breathing
- Swelling of the face/legs
- Chest pain
Is there a difference between weight gain and edema from blood pressure medicines?
Yes. True fat weight gain is different from edema (fluid). Losartan is not commonly linked to fat gain, but people may notice temporary “weight gain” if they retain fluid because of other factors related to their health or concurrent medications.
If you tell me your situation, I can narrow it down
If you share:
- your dose and how long you’ve been on losartan,
- how much weight you gained and over how many weeks,
- any swelling or breathing symptoms,
- and other medications you take,
I can help you think through the most likely cause and what to ask your prescriber.
