Preparing the Ozempic Pen
Check the pen's expiration date and liquid color—clear and colorless is normal. Wash hands. Remove pen cap. For new pens, attach a new needle: peel off paper tab, screw needle straight on until secure, then remove outer and inner needle caps (save outer cap). Prime the pen: dial to 1 mg flow check symbol (looks like a droplet), hold pen with needle up, tap cartridge to clear air bubbles, press button fully until 0 shows and a drop appears at needle tip. Repeat priming if no drop. [1][2]
Checking and Dialing Your Dose
For weekly doses (0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg), look at dose selector. Turn dial until your prescribed dose lines up with the pointer. If it won't dial past max (2 mg), don't force it—contact your doctor or pharmacist. The dose counter shows units but use mg markings. Pen clicks are normal. [1][2]
Injecting the Dose
Pick injection site: abdomen (at least 2 inches from navel), thigh (front), or upper arm. Clean with alcohol swab, let dry. Insert needle straight in at 90-degree angle, like putting on a sticker. Press and hold dose button until counter returns to 0 and holds for 6 seconds (count slowly). Needle may leak a drop afterward—normal. Leave needle in place during injection. [1][2]
After Injection
Withdraw needle straight out. Do not rub site. Replace outer needle cap, unscrew needle, and discard in sharps container (get from pharmacy). Recap pen without needle. Store unused pens in fridge (36-46°F); in-use pens at room temp (up to 56 days). Don't freeze or use if discolored. [1][2]
How Often and When to Inject
Inject once weekly, same day each week, anytime (with/without food). If missed >5 days, skip and resume next scheduled day. Rotate sites weekly to avoid irritation. Start at 0.25 mg for 4 weeks, then increase as prescribed. [1][2]
Common Mistakes and Fixes
- No priming drop? Redial and try again (up to 6 times).
- Dial stuck? Check battery (some pens beep); replace if low.
- Bruising or lumps? Use new needle, inject slowly, rotate sites.
- Pen won't dial dose? May be empty—track doses (pen holds 4 weekly doses at 2 mg).
Always follow your prescription; consult doctor for pain, swelling, or allergic signs. [1][2]
