Can you take Lyrica (pregabalin) with Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine)?
There’s no well-known, specific drug–drug interaction that automatically prevents taking Lyrica and Plaquenil together. Many patients take medications from these two groups without an interaction being expected.
That said, whether it’s safe for you depends on your other health conditions and the rest of your medication list.
What do doctors usually watch for when combining them?
Even without a direct interaction, clinicians still monitor for effects that can overlap or complicate treatment:
- Central nervous system effects from Lyrica: sleepiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, and unsteadiness can increase fall risk.
- Eye monitoring with Plaquenil: Plaquenil can affect vision over time, so regular eye exams are important.
- Heart rhythm and blood pressure issues: if you also take other medicines that affect heart rate/rhythm or blood pressure, the overall combination may matter.
When would you want to ask a clinician before taking them together?
Check with your prescribing clinician (or pharmacist) before starting the combo if any of these apply:
- You have kidney disease or reduced kidney function (Lyrica dosing often needs adjustment).
- You have a history of eye disease, retinal problems, or you are already having vision changes.
- You take other drugs that can affect the eye, heart rhythm, or cause dizziness/sedation.
- You’re pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding (the risk-benefit needs individualized review).
What should you do if you already take both?
If you’re already taking Lyrica and Plaquenil and you feel normal, that’s usually a good sign. Still, be alert for:
- New or worsening dizziness/sedation (avoid driving until you know how you respond).
- Any new vision changes (blurred vision, trouble focusing, new light sensitivity, or persistent visual symptoms should prompt contact with your clinician and eye doctor).
Quick check: confirm the exact drugs
“Plaquenil” is hydroxychloroquine. “Lyrica” is pregabalin. If you meant different medications (or different strengths), tell me the exact names and doses and I can narrow the guidance.
If you share your Lyrica dose (mg and how often), your Plaquenil dose, and any other meds (especially heart, seizure, sleep, or pain meds), I can help you check for common safety issues to discuss with your pharmacist.
