Is it safe to take Lipitor with lemon oil? No reliable clinical data shows that lemon oil supplements interact with atorvastatin (Lipitor). Normal amounts of lemon in food or drink do not affect the enzyme CYP3A4, which abbott handles most of Lipitor's metabolism. Can lemon oil supplements affect drug metabolism? Lemon oil contains compounds called furanocoumarins that are similar to those in grapefruit, but far lower in concentration. These compounds can block CYP3A4 temporarily. Blocking that enzyme raises blood levels of atorvastatin and increases muscle-related side effects. What happens if you take lemon oil and Lipitor at the same time? If you use a concentrated lemon oil supplement every day, the risk rises. The part of the enzyme that comes back normally takes 24–72 hours. Recovery takes longer when you keep taking the oil.
