How long should you wait to take Advil (ibuprofen) after your last dose?
A common adult rule for “strong Advil” (ibuprofen) is to wait until the next dose interval has passed and you’re still within the label maximum for the day. Typical dosing for OTC ibuprofen is every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
So, if you took your last dose at a specific time, you generally can take the next dose after the label’s interval (often 4–6 hours). Do not take extra doses to “catch up.”
What if you took it for fever or pain—does the wait time change?
The timing usually does not change based on the reason (pain vs fever). What matters is:
- how long it’s been since the last ibuprofen dose, and
- staying under the daily maximum on the package.
When you should not take more “strong Advil” yet
Skip another ibuprofen dose and get medical guidance first if any of these apply:
- You have stomach bleeding/ulcers, severe heart disease, or significant kidney problems.
- You’re dehydrated (for example, vomiting/diarrhea) or have kidney disease.
- You are on blood thinners (like warfarin) or certain other meds that raise bleeding risk.
- You took other NSAIDs already today (naproxen/Aleve, aspirin for pain, etc.). Taking multiple NSAIDs together increases risk.
