Treatment begins at 10–20 mg and rises only if needed. Doctors adjust based on LDL levels, risk for heart disease, and how the patient responds. Children and some adults with kidney or liver issues receive lower amounts.

Does 80 mg carry extra risk

Studies show the 80 mg dose produces more muscle pain and enzyme elevations than lower doses. The FDA issued a warning in 2011 against starting new patients at 80 mg because of these risks.

What happens if a patient takes too much

Taking above 80 mg does not improve cholesterol numbers any further. Overdose mainly causes intensified side effects such as muscle breakdown, liver stress, and extreme fatigue.
