Can you take Lexapro (escitalopram) and Prozac (fluoxetine) together?
Mixing Lexapro (escitalopram) and Prozac (fluoxetine) is sometimes discussed when clinicians switch antidepressants, but taking both at the same time usually isn’t recommended without a prescriber’s plan. Both are SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), so using them together can raise the risk of side effects from excess serotonin.
Why combining two SSRIs can be risky
Taking Lexapro and Prozac together means you’re stacking the same drug class. Potential problems include:
- Serotonin syndrome (a rare but serious reaction from too much serotonin)
- Worsened side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, agitation, tremor, sweating, and sexual side effects
