Official Storage Instructions for Lipitor
Store Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) tablets at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions are permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) for shorter periods, such as during shipping.[1][2]
How to Protect It During Storage
Keep the container tightly closed and protect from moisture. Do not use if the blister packaging is damaged. Tablets should stay in their original packaging until use.[1][2]
What Happens If Stored Wrong
Exposure to excessive heat, light, or humidity can degrade the active ingredient, reducing effectiveness. Freezing is not recommended and may cause physical damage to tablets. Discard if tablets show discoloration or unusual odor.2
Differences Between Tablet Strengths or Forms
Storage is the same across 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablets. No pediatric suspension or other forms exist for Lipitor, so these rules apply universally.[1]
Shelf Life and Expiration
Unopened bottles or blisters typically last 2-3 years from manufacture, marked on the label. Once opened, use within the expiration date, ideally within months to avoid potency loss from air exposure.[2]
Travel and Short-Term Storage Tips
For trips, room-temperature excursions up to 30°C are fine for up to 30 days. Avoid car glove compartments or direct sunlight. Carry in original packaging.3
