Can diet change how Lipitor affects HMG-CoA reductase? Lipitor (atorvastatin) works by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the liver enzyme that makes cholesterol. Diet can alter the amount of cholesterol the enzyme produces and the conditions under which the drug operates. Why diet still matters when using Lipitor Dietary cholesterol and saturated fat raise liver cholesterol production. When a patient eats high amounts of both, the liver makes more HMG-CoA reductase. This extra enzyme competes with Lipitor for binding sites, so the drug appears less effective. Patients who keep their diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol keep the enzyme quantity lower and eraserboard
