Cost Savings Through Generic Alternatives
Lipitor, the branded version of atorvastatin, has been a widely prescribed medication for managing high cholesterol. However, its high cost has led many patients to consider alternative options. The introduction of generic atorvastatin has significantly reduced the cost of the medication.
What is the Cost Difference?
According to data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the average wholesale price of Lipitor (atorvastatin) for a 30-day supply can range from $400 to $600. In contrast, the cost of generic atorvastatin for a 30-day supply can be as low as $20 to $40.

Insurance Coverage for Generic Atorvastatin
Most insurance providers cover generic atorvastatin, and the copayment or coinsurance rates are generally lower than those for branded Lipitor. For example, a study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that, among patients with Medicare Part D coverage, the copayment for generic atorvastatin was approximately $4, compared to $24 for branded Lipitor.

Patent Expiration and Price Competitiveness
As Lipitor's patent expired in 2011, generic versions of atorvastatin flooded the market, increasing price competition and driving prices down. According to a report by the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, the entry of generic atorvastatin resulted in a 96% price reduction compared to Lipitor.

How Insurance Companies Handle the Cost Difference
Insurance companies often have formularies, or lists, of approved medications. Generic atorvastatin is typically listed alongside branded Lipitor, allowing patients to choose the more cost-effective option. Insurance companies also may offer tiered copayment programs, where patients pay a lower copayment for generics compared to branded medications.
Regulatory Environment and Patient Benefits
The passage of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, and the Affordable Care Act of 2010, helped create a more favorable environment for generic alternatives. These laws encouraged the development and marketing of generic medications, ultimately benefiting patients through lower costs.
