How soon can you try to conceive after Gonal-F?
Gonal-F (follitropin alfa) is follicle-stimulating hormone used to help stimulate egg development. After a Gonal-F cycle, many clinicians advise trying to conceive starting with the cycle in which you’re ovulating—often timed around the trigger shot (hCG) used to finalize egg maturation—rather than waiting months.
Does the number of days after the last Gonal-F injection matter?
The practical timing usually depends more on what your clinic did to trigger ovulation than on how many days you used Gonal-F. Gonal-F is typically followed by an ovulation trigger, then intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) is timed around ovulation. That means the “wait” is often measured in days after trigger/ovulation rather than weeks after stopping Gonal-F.
What if you used an hCG trigger or had IVF/IUI?
If your Gonal-F was part of:
- Timed intercourse: your attempt usually starts around the ovulation window after the trigger.
- IUI: insemination is commonly scheduled around ovulation after the trigger.
- IVF: egg retrieval and embryo transfer follow a planned schedule, so the timing to “try to conceive” looks different than for natural intercourse.
Should you wait if there were multiple follicles or an OHSS risk?
Your safest timing depends on ovarian response. If you developed signs of high ovarian activity (for example, many follicles), clinicians may recommend different timing or precautions to reduce risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). In that situation, the “how long to wait” question is best answered by your treating fertility specialist based on your ultrasound and estradiol results.
What you can ask your clinic (to get a clear go/no-go date)
Because protocols vary, ask:
- “When was my trigger shot, and what date should I start trying?”
- “Based on my follicle count and estradiol, is there any reason to delay?”
- “Should we plan intercourse or IUI during a specific window this cycle?”
If you share whether you were using Gonal-F for timed intercourse, IUI, or IVF—and whether you had an hCG trigger—I can help translate that into the typical day-to-day timing patients are usually instructed to follow.
