What's the difference between Enoxaparin and Clexane?
Enoxaparin and Clexane are two commonly prescribed low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) used to prevent and treat blood clots. Although they are often used interchangeably, there are some key differences.
[1] Different Trade Names, Same Active Ingredient
Enoxaparin and Clexane are both used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), and to treat acute coronary syndromes. They contain the same active ingredient, enoxaparin sodium, but are marketed under different brand names: Lovenox (Enoxaparin) and Clexane (Sanofi), respectively.
Manufacturing Differences
Clexane is a registered trademark of Sanofi, while Lovenox is a registered trademark of Pfizer. Although both are manufactured to the same international standards, minor manufacturing differences may exist. Enoxaparin used in Lovenox is synthesized by Pfizer, while that used in Clexane is synthesized by Sanofi.
[2] Administration and Dosage
Enoxaparin and Clexane have similar administration and dosage guidelines, but some differences exist. Clexane is supplied in a range of strengths, including 60mg and 80mg pre-filled syringes, whereas Lovenox is available in different strengths, including 30mg, 60mg, and 80mg syringes. The recommended dosages for both medications are typically the same.

While both medications are used for similar indications, Clexane is approved for the treatment of unstable angina, non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and for preventing recurrent DVT/PE in patients at high risk of recurrence. Enoxaparin (Lovenox) is also approved for similar uses.
[4] Patent Expiration
Enoxaparin patent has expired, allowing generic versions of the medication to be manufactured by several pharmaceutical companies. Sanofi, manufacturer of Clexane, has a separate patent for Clexane, which is set to expire in 2027 in the United States.
