Can you take aspirin and Aleve (naproxen) together?
In general, it’s best to avoid taking aspirin and Aleve (naproxen) at the same time unless a clinician tells you to. Both drugs are NSAIDs/anti-platelet medicines that increase the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding when used together. Combining them doesn’t usually add meaningful pain relief compared with using one medicine at a time.
Why combining aspirin with naproxen can be risky
Aspirin and naproxen both affect how your stomach lining protects itself and can increase bleeding risk. Together they raise the chance of:
- Stomach pain, ulcers, or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Easy bruising or bleeding, depending on dose and personal risk factors
People who already have a history of ulcers or GI bleeding, take blood thinners, or have certain medical conditions are at higher risk.
If you’re on low-dose aspirin, can you still use Aleve?
If you take low-dose aspirin for heart or stroke prevention, don’t add Aleve without checking with your prescriber or pharmacist. They may recommend:
- Using acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead for pain/fever, or
- Limiting or avoiding NSAID use, or
- Adjusting timing/dose with medical guidance
Low-dose aspirin can also interact with how safely naproxen is used.
What’s usually recommended instead
For occasional pain or fever, many people can choose one option rather than both at once:
- Use a single NSAID (either aspirin or Aleve), or
- Use acetaminophen if you can take it safely
If you’re trying to treat frequent pain, it’s worth asking a clinician which approach is safest for you.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent care if you have signs of bleeding such as black/tarry stools, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, severe stomach pain, or unusual weakness/dizziness after taking these medicines.
