Is it safe to take Motrin (ibuprofen) on an empty stomach?
For many people, taking Motrin (ibuprofen) on an empty stomach still works, but it can be harder on the stomach. Ibuprofen is an NSAID and can irritate the stomach lining, which may raise the risk of stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, or even ulcers/bleeding—especially with higher doses, frequent use, or if you already have stomach problems.
What happens if you take Motrin on an empty stomach?
Common effects are gastrointestinal irritation symptoms, such as:
- stomach pain or burning
- nausea
- heartburn or indigestion
Serious but less common risks include:
- gastrointestinal bleeding (black/tarry stools, vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds)
- ulcers
How can you take it to reduce stomach irritation?
If you’re using ibuprofen for occasional pain or fever, taking it with food or milk can reduce stomach irritation. Some people also find it easier to tolerate with a small snack even if it is not a full meal.
Avoid taking it “just as a swig of medicine” with no food if you’ve had stomach sensitivity before.
When is it especially risky to take Motrin without food?
Extra caution is warranted if any of the following apply:
- history of stomach ulcer or GI bleeding
- use of blood thinners (like warfarin), antiplatelet drugs (like clopidogrel), or corticosteroids
- heavy alcohol use
- older age
