Rifampin was discovered in the late 1950s, during the course of research into antibiotics made by soil bacteria. The drug was first identified in 1957, and it was subsequently developed and brought into medical use in the early 1960s.
Rifampin came out of screening programs that looked for new anti-bacterial compounds produced by microorganisms. Researchers isolated a rifamycin-class compound from bacteria (notably species associated with the genus Amycolatopsis) and then developed it into rifampin for clinical use.
After its discovery, rifampin entered clinical development and then was introduced as an antituberculosis drug in the early 1960s, when it started being used as part of treatment regimens for tuberculosis.
