This raises blood levels of the statin and increases the chance of muscle pain or, rarely, serious muscle breakdown. Doctors usually lower the Lipitor dose or pause it while the antibiotic course lasts.

What happens if the interaction is ignored?
Continued use at the regular Lipitor dose can push atorvastatin concentrations high enough to trigger myopathy or rhabdomyolysis. Patients taking these macrolides often report unexplained muscle aches within days.
