Cardizem is the brand name for diltiazem, a calcium-channel blocker. It lowers cardiovascular activity by reducing calcium entry into heart and smooth muscle cells, which decreases the strength of contraction and slows electrical conduction through the heart’s conduction system.[1]
Diltiazem slows conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node. That reduces ventricular rate in situations where the AV node is part of the abnormal rhythm pathway, such as some forms of supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation/flutter with rapid ventricular response.[1]
By blocking calcium influx in vascular smooth muscle, diltiazem causes relaxation of blood vessels (vasodilation). That lowers systemic vascular resistance and helps reduce blood pressure.[1]
Diltiazem acts on both: - Cardiac tissue: it slows AV nodal conduction. - Vascular smooth muscle: it causes vasodilation.[1]
Because it slows AV conduction and relaxes blood vessels, patients may see improvements in symptoms related to fast heart rates (less palpitations) and/or high blood pressure (reduced strain on the heart). Exact experiences vary by dose and indication. Sources: 1. DrugBank. Diltiazem (Cardizem) — Mechanism of action. https://go.drugbank.com/drugs/DB01037
