Lipitor (atorvastatin) does not need to be taken with food. It can be taken any time of day, with or without meals, because food does not meaningfully change how the drug works for most people.
Tums is calcium carbonate. It can bind to some medicines in the gut and reduce how much of them gets absorbed. The key practical issue is whether your statin regimen includes a medicine that interacts more strongly with antacids. For Lipitor specifically, an antacid like Tums generally is not considered a major interaction problem. Taking Lipitor either before or after meals (and either before or after Tums) is usually acceptable.
If you want to be extra cautious, keep a buffer between them. A common approach is: - Take Lipitor at a consistent time of day. - Take Tums at least a couple of hours apart from Lipitor. This reduces the chance that stomach/gut contents could affect absorption, even if Lipitor usually isn’t significantly affected.
Follow your clinician’s instructions if you’re taking other medicines that can interact with antacids (for example, some antibiotics or thyroid hormone), since those interactions are more common. If you tell me what else you take (and your Lipitor dose), I can help you think through which meds need spacing.
