What Kisqali Treats
Kisqali (ribociclib) is a targeted therapy used to treat hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) advanced or metastatic breast cancer in adults. It is given with an aromatase inhibitor as initial endocrine-based therapy or with fulvestrant after disease progression on endocrine therapy.[1]
How Kisqali Works
Kisqali is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor that blocks proteins driving cancer cell division, slowing tumor growth in HR+/HER2- breast cancer cells.[1]
Common Treatment Combinations
- First-line: Kisqali plus an aromatase inhibitor (like letrozole or anastrozole).
- Second-line: Kisqali plus fulvestrant for patients whose cancer progressed on prior endocrine therapy.[1]
Who Qualifies for Kisqali
Approved for postmenopausal women, men, and pre/perimenopausal women (with ovarian suppression). Not for early-stage breast cancer or other cancer types.[1]
Dosing and Administration
Taken orally as 600 mg tablets once daily for 21 days, followed by 7 days off, in 28-day cycles. Dose adjustments possible for side effects.[1]
Key Side Effects Patients Report
Frequent issues include low white blood cell counts (neutropenia), nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, hair loss, and liver enzyme elevations. Serious risks: infections, lung problems, heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation).[1]
When Did FDA Approve Kisqali?
Initial approval in 2017 for combination with an aromatase inhibitor; expanded in 2018 for fulvestrant combo. Latest updates confirm ongoing use.[1]
Kisqali vs. Other CDK4/6 Inhibitors
Compares to Ibrance (palbociclib) and Verzenio (abemaciclib). All improve progression-free survival in HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer, but Kisqali shows similar efficacy with potentially less severe diarrhea than Verzenio.[1][2]
Patent Status and Generic Availability
Novartis holds patents on Kisqali; key U.S. patents expire around 2034, with challenges ongoing. No generics approved yet. Check DrugPatentWatch.com for latest expiry dates and litigation.[3]
