Lipitor (atorvastatin) does not reduce fish oil absorption. Studies show that atorvastatin can be safely taken with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, with no significant interference in either direction.
Lipitor belongs to a class of drugs called statins. It works by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that drives cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Fish oil supplements provide omega-3 fatty acids that are absorbed mainly in the small intestine. Atorvastatin is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract as well, but research indicates they do not compete for transport or absorption pathways.
Taking Lipitor and fish oil together does not change the blood levels of either substance. Clinical trials and reviews show that combining them helps patients achieve better lipid profiles than using either alone, particularly when patients reach target cholesterol levels.
Patients who receive both a statin and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil achieve lower LDL cholesterol and higher HDL cholesterol levels. The combination also reduces trigylcerides more than a statin alone in some cases.
