Live Vaccines and Cosentyx
Cosentyx (secukinumab), an IL-17A inhibitor for psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, suppresses immune responses. Avoid live vaccines during treatment and for at least 4-6 weeks after the last dose, as they can cause infection in immunocompromised patients.[1][2] Examples include MMR, varicella, oral polio, and yellow fever vaccines.
Non-Live Vaccines
Inactivated or recombinant vaccines (e.g., flu shot, Tdap, HPV, pneumococcal) are generally safe and recommended. However, antibody responses may be reduced, so vaccinate before starting Cosentyx if possible.[1][3] Check titers post-vaccination for high-risk patients.
Timing Recommendations
- Complete all vaccinations per CDC schedule before initiating Cosentyx.
- If urgent, administer non-live vaccines during treatment but monitor efficacy.
- Wait 4 weeks after stopping Cosentyx before live vaccines; consult prescriber for individualized timing.[2][4]
