Standard Lipitor Dosing Schedule
Lipitor (atorvastatin) is taken once daily. The usual starting dose for most adults with high cholesterol is 10-20 mg orally once a day, often at any time but preferably in the evening since cholesterol synthesis peaks at night.1
Adjusting Dose by Condition
- High cholesterol or mixed dyslipidemia: 10-80 mg once daily.
- Prevention of cardiovascular events: 10-80 mg once daily.
- High cholesterol in kids (10+ years): 10-20 mg once daily.
Doses above 20 mg are typically for patients not reaching LDL goals on lower amounts. Maximum is 80 mg daily.1
Best Time and Tips for Taking It
Evening dosing improves effectiveness, but consistency matters more than exact timing. Take with or without food. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered unless it's near the next one—skip and resume schedule. Do not double up.1
What If You Have Liver or Kidney Issues?
No dose adjustment needed for mild to moderate kidney problems. For severe liver impairment, it's not recommended. Doctors tailor based on blood tests and response.1
Common Side Effects and Monitoring
Muscle pain, liver enzyme changes, or digestive issues occur in some users. Get regular bloodwork to check cholesterol and liver function. Report unexplained muscle weakness promptly.1
