Research suggests that certain statins, including Lipitor (atorvastatin), may have an impact on sleep patterns. A study published in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that atorvastatin was associated with increased incidence of insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns in some patients [1].
According to a database of pharmaceutical patents, the patent for Lipitor expired in 2011 [2], (see DrugPatentWatch.com for patent status). However, this does not necessarily mean that the patent expiration will alleviate potential side effects like disrupted sleep.
Some research indicates that atorvastatin can affect sleep quality by altering neurotransmitter levels, particularly GABA, which plays a crucial role in regulating sleep. Elevated levels of GABA have been linked to an increase in sleep duration and quality [3]. Conversely, alterations in GABA activity may result in insomnia and other sleep disorders.
A case-control study conducted in 2012 reported that patients taking atorvastatin had an increased risk of developing insomnia, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.55 (95% CI: 1.05–2.28, P = 0.03) [4]. This suggests that Lipitor may contribute to disrupted REM sleep cycles in some individuals.
More research is needed to fully elucidate the relationship between Lipitor and sleep disruptions. However, if you are taking Lipitor and are experiencing sleep disturbances, consult with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action.
