Armodafinil 150 mg tablets (brand name Nuvigil) are a prescription wakefulness-promoting medication. They’re used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness from narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome, or shift work sleep disorder. It’s the R-enantiomer of modafinil and works to promote wakefulness. Typical dosing (consult your doctor for personal advice): - Narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea: 150 mg once daily in the morning. May increase to 250 mg/day if needed (maximum 250 mg/day). - Shift work sleep disorder: 150 mg about 1 hour before the start of the shift (can be adjusted, but 150 mg is common). Do not take too late in the day due to insomnia risk. Important points: - Onset is usually within about an hour; effects can last through the day (longer in some people). - Take in the morning to avoid trouble sleeping at night. - Common side effects: headache, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia. If you take it late in the day, it may cause trouble sleeping. - Serious but rare: severe rash, allergic reactions, chest pain, high blood pressure, fainting. - Interactions: armodafinil can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Use an additional or alternative method of contraception during treatment and for a period after stopping, as advised by your clinician. - Other cautions: not approved for children. Pregnancy category and breastfeeding guidance should be discussed with a clinician. It’s a Schedule IV controlled substance in many places. If you’d like, tell me your condition (narcolepsy, OSA, or shift work) and any other meds you take, and I can tailor the info (dosing notes, what to watch for, and when to see a clinician).
