Dairy products contain calcium that can bind to atorvastatin, the active ingredient in Lipitor, and reduce how much of the drug enters the bloodstream. The effect is small, but it can lower blood levels of the statin.

How much does calcium change absorption

Clinical studies show that taking atorvastatin with a calcium-rich meal lowers peak blood levels by about 10–15 percent. The total amount of drug absorbed over 24 hours drops by roughly the same amount. That change is usually not large enough to affect cholesterol control for most people.

What happens if you take Lipitor with milk

Milk contains both calcium and fat. The fat may actually slow stomach emptying and slightly increase atorvastatin absorption, so the net result of drinking milk with the tablet is close to neutral. Most patients can take their dose with or without milk without seeing a difference in cholesterol numbers.

When is the safest time to take Lipitor

The prescribing information recommends taking atorvastatin in the evening because cholesterol production peaks overnight. Spacing it two hours away from large servings of dairy gives the clearest separation, but the label does not require it.
