How is UZEDY administered?
UZEDY (risperidone) extended-release injectable suspension is given as a gluteal intramuscular injection into the muscle of the buttock (glute). It is not administered into the arm.[1][2]
What injection volumes and sites does UZEDY use?
- 50 mg dose: 2 mL injected into one gluteal site.
- 100 mg dose: 4 mL split into two 2 mL injections, each in a separate gluteal site (one per buttock).
The gluteal site is specified due to the drug's formulation requiring deep intramuscular delivery for slow release over one or two months.[1][3]
Why gluteal and not arm or other sites?
UZEDY's high volume (up to 4 mL total) makes arm administration impractical, as deltoid muscle capacity is limited to about 2 mL per site. Gluteal injections allow larger volumes safely. Instructions prohibit thigh or deltoid use.[1][2]
How often is UZEDY given?
Monthly (every 4 weeks) or every 2 months, always by a healthcare professional after confirming no hypersensitivity.[1][3]
Common patient questions on UZEDY injections
Patients report mild pain or soreness at the gluteal site, resolving in days. Rotate sides for multiple injections to minimize irritation. No oral risperidone loading dose is needed.[2][3]
