How is Zepbound given? Zepbound is injected once a week under the skin. The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg, then the dose is raised every four weeks until the patient reaches the dose that works best. Injections can be given in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. When is the best time to inject? The shot can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Choose the same day each week so it becomes routine. If a dose is missed, inject it within four days. After that, skip the missed dose and return to the regular schedule. Can you inject it yourself? Yes. The medicine comes in single-use pens or vials. The pen is designed for one-time use and requires no mixing. Most patients learn to inject in the office or through the instructions that come with the pen. A caregiver can also give the injection if needed. What happens if you miss a dose or change the day? If four or more days have passed, simply wait for the next scheduled day. Changing the day is allowed as long as the new day is at least three days after the last injection. Always check with the prescriber before making frequent changes. How long does one pen last? Each pen contains one weekly dose. Pens are stored in the refrigerator but can be kept at room temperature for up to 21 days. Once a pen is used or left out longer than 21 days, it should be thrown away. Does the injection site matter? Any of the three approved sites works equally well. Rotate sites each week to reduce skin irritation. Avoid injecting into areas that are red, bruised, or scarred. Are there storage rules patients often overlook? Keep unopened pens in the refrigerator between 36 °F and 46 °F. Do not freeze. If traveling, an insulated bag with ice packs keeps the medicine within the safe temperature range. Never leave the pen in a hot car. What should you do with used pens? Place used pens in a puncture-resistant sharps container. Local pharmacies or health departments usually accept these containers for safe disposal.
