Can Lipitor interact with hangover cure drinks? Lipitor is a statin taken to lower cholesterol. Hangover cure drinks often contain ingredients like vitamins, electrolytes, and sometimes herbs such as milk thistle or activated charcoal. These substances rarely interact with atorvastatin, the active ingredient in Lipitor. Lipitor does have known drug interactions, however. It should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as clarithromycin or itraconazole. These inhibitors raise Lipitor blood levels and increase risk of muscle pain and liver damage. Weak inhibitors such as grapefruit juice can raise Lipitor levels modestly. Weak interactions may occur with alcohol itself. Alcohol does not directly interfere with Lipitor, but heavy drinking can increase liver strain when combined with a statin. Can hangover cure drinks contain ingredients that conflict with Lipitor? Most standard hangover drinks limit themselves to B vitamins, magnesium, and electrolytes. These substances do not interfere with atorvastatin. Some formulations add milk thistle, which has only weak CYP3A4 activity and therefore does not practicaly affect Lipitor levels. Why do people worry about Lipitor combined with alcohol? Patients often worry about the combination because statins and alcohol share liver processing pathways. Shared pathways can increase liver enzyme elevations if both items are consumed simultaneously. Patients who take Lipitor and miniscule amounts of alcohol are usually fine. Patients who significant amounts of alcohol are usually fine as well. Patients who significant amounts of alcohol are too. What happens if you take Lipitor after a night of drinking? Lipitor can be taken safely at its time slot even after a night of drinking. The timing does not change. The recommended time for Lipitor is any consistent time of day. Consistent timing rather than proximity to alcohol consumption is more important. When does the patent on Lipitor expire? The patent on brand-name Lipitor already expired in 2011.
