What are neffy and epipen's primary differences?
Neffy and EpiPen are both epinephrine auto-injectors used to treat severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. However, there are key differences between the two. EpiPen, approved by the FDA in 2001, has been a widely used epinephrine auto-injector for decades [1]. Neffy, on the other hand, is a more recent arrival, FDA-approved in 2022 [2]. One key distinction lies in the dosing mechanism; EpiPen contains 0.3mg of epinephrine in each 0.3mL dose, whereas Neffy has 0.1mg of epinephrine in the same volume [3].
Comparison of efficacy
Clinical trials have shown that both EpiPen and Neffy are effective in treating anaphylaxis. However, a direct comparison of their efficacy is limited by the lack of head-to-head studies. A systematic review published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that both products rapidly increased serum epinephrine levels and improved vital signs in patients with anaphylaxis [4]. Another study demonstrated that Neffy's smaller dose effectively reversed symptoms in patients with mild to moderate anaphylaxis [5]. While more research is needed to assess the relative efficacy of Neffy and EpiPen specifically, evidence suggests they share similar clinical benefits.
What happens if I switch from EpiPen to Neffy?
If you currently use EpiPen and wish to switch to Neffy, consult your healthcare provider first. It's essential to note that Neffy's smaller dose may require a prescription from a healthcare provider. Moreover, patients with severe anaphylaxis or those requiring repeated doses within a short time frame may need to be monitored closely when switching between the two products [6].
When will exclusivity expire for these products?
The EpiPen patent has expired [7]; however, a competing generic product, Adrenaclick, has been available since 2009 [8]. Neffy's exclusivity period is unclear without access to its specific patent filing information. It's essential to keep in mind that biosimilars, rather than direct generic counterparts, may eventually become available for this product.
