Can Descovy be used for PrEP?
Descovy (emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide, or FTC/TAF) can be used for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) only for certain populations. It is approved for PrEP in adults and adolescents at risk of HIV through sex, but it is not approved for people at risk from receptive vaginal sex.
That means Descovy is a PrEP option for people at risk via receptive anal sex, among other sexual exposures covered by the indication, but clinicians generally use Truvada (FTC/TDF) instead for those whose HIV risk includes receptive vaginal sex.
Who can use it for PrEP, and who can’t?
Based on the approved PrEP indication, Descovy is used for:
- Adults and adolescents with risk of HIV from sex exposures covered by the label (notably receptive anal sex risk)
It is not used for:
- People at risk from receptive vaginal sex (because the approval excludes this exposure route)
If you’re deciding between PrEP medicines, the type of sexual exposure is a key factor in which drug is appropriate.
What’s the difference between Descovy and Truvada for PrEP?
Both Descovy and Truvada contain an emtricitabine component, but they use different tenofovir forms:
- Descovy uses tenofovir alafenamide (TAF)
- Truvada uses tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)
A practical reason this matters is that the FDA approvals differ for PrEP populations, specifically regarding receptive vaginal sex risk.
Do you need testing before starting PrEP with Descovy?
For any PrEP regimen, clinicians typically require baseline evaluation before prescribing, including:
- Confirming you do not already have HIV
- Checking kidney function (because tenofovir-based PrEP is kidney-relevant)
- Assessing other factors such as hepatitis status and STI screening, depending on local practice
What to ask your clinician
If your question is “Can I use Descovy for PrEP?”, the most important clarifying questions are:
- Is my HIV risk exposure route included in Descovy’s PrEP indication?
- What do my kidney tests show?
- Which PrEP option fits my situation best (Descovy vs Truvada), based on both label indications and your health history?
