Cefixime dosage for children?

Common pediatric dose (oral suspension)

- Dose: 8 mg/kg per day, given in two divided doses (4 mg/kg every 12 hours).
- Max daily dose: do not exceed 400 mg per day.
- Typical durations:
- Acute otitis media, sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis: usually 5–10 days (often 5–7 days for pharyngitis).
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections: typically about 7 days.

Example (using 100 mg/5 mL suspension, strength 20 mg/mL)
- Calculation: 8 mg/kg/day total → 4 mg/kg per dose
- Volume per dose = (4 mg/kg) / (20 mg/mL) = 0.2 mL/kg per dose
- Volume per day = 0.4 mL/kg (split into two doses)
- If the child weighs 12 kg: per dose ≈ 2.4 mL, twice daily ≈ 4.8 mL per day

Important notes
- Always weight-based and prescription-specific. If the child weighs enough that 8 mg/kg/day would exceed 400 mg/day, the daily dose should be capped at 400 mg (split into two doses).
- Formulations vary (suspension strengths). Use the exact product label to convert to mL.
- For infants under 6 months or if there are kidney problems, dosing may differ; follow a clinician’s instructions.
- Take with or without food. Finish the full course unless your clinician tells you to stop.
- Tell the clinician about any allergy to cephalosporins or penicillin; seek medical advice if there are severe diarrhea, vomiting, or signs of an allergic reaction.
